William was born in 1799 in South Ferriby, Lincoln, England and his christening took place there on September 22nd, 1799.  William's father was Joseph Rack and his mother was Elizabeth Thompson.  His paternal grandparents were William Rack and Eleanor Lamin. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Ellen, Dinah and Bessey.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
