Bessey was born in 1813 in South Ferriby, Lincoln, England and her christening took place there on September 12th, 1813.  Bessey's father was Joseph Rack and her mother was Elizabeth Thompson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Rack and Eleanor Lamin. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Mary, Ellen and Dinah.  She was the youngest of the six children.
