Clyde was born in 1909 in Illinois. Clyde's father was George P. Robb and his mother was Mary Catherine Hooten (Robb). His maternal grandparents were James Martin Hooten and Harriet Ann Webb (Hooten). He had three brothers and two sisters, named Floyd, Harry, Clarence, Myrtle and Ivah. He was the youngest of the six children.
