Thomas was born in 1776 in Tenterden, Kent, England and his baptism took place on November 10th, 1776.  Thomas' father was Thomas Reader and his mother was Sarah Merralls. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Richard, Judith, Mary, June, Catherine, Hannah, Philly and Harriett.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
