Harriett was born in 1793 in Tenterden, Kent, England and her baptism took place on March 17th, 1793.  Harriett's father was Thomas Reader and her mother was Sarah Merralls. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Judith, Mary, June, Catherine, Hannah and Philly.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
