Philly was born in 1790 in Tenterden, Kent, England and her baptism took place on March 7th, 1790.  Philly's father was Thomas Reader and her mother was Sarah Merralls. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Judith, Mary, June, Catherine, Hannah and Harriett.  She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
