Mary was born in 1779 in Tenterden, Kent, England and her baptism took place on December 15th, 1779.  Mary's father was Thomas Reader and her mother was Sarah Merralls. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Judith, June, Catherine, Hannah, Philly and Harriett.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
