Martha Suzanna was born on November 12th, 1843 in Port Elizabeth.  Martha Suzanna's father was John Parkin and her mother was Maria Dorothea Ferreira. She had two brothers and a sister, named Alfred, Thomas and Maria Magdalena.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had seven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named William, John, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte.
