Jane was born on February 24th, 1819 in Devonshire, England.  Jane's father was John Parkin and her mother was Elizabeth Howard. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Alfred, Thomas, Maria Magdalena and Martha Suzanna.  She died at the age of 77 in 1896 in Port Elizabeth.
