Alfred was born on May 19th, 1845 in Port Elizabeth.  Alfred's father was John Parkin and his mother was Maria Dorothea Ferreira. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Maria Magdalena and Martha Suzanna.  He was the third oldest of the four children. He had seven half-brothers and three half-sisters, named William, John, Robert, George, Cradock, Isaac, Frederick, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte.
