William was born in December 1849 in Snaith, East Riding, Yorkshire and his christening took place there on June 27th, 1852.1 2  William's father was Charles Emanuel Stones and his mother was Harriet Mary Hall.  His maternal grandparents were William Hall and Mary Hepworth. He had five brothers and nine sisters, named James, Robert, John, Frederick, Alexander, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Emma, Sarah, Sarah, Miriam, Minnie and Ada.  He was the sixth oldest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 61 on April 28th, 1911 in Easington, Co Durham.3
