William was born in 1813 in Rayne, Essex and his christening took place there on July 4th, 1813.1 2   William's father was John Olley and his mother was Jane Shonk.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte, Mary and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
