John was born on April 28th, 1811 in Rayne, Essex and his christening took place there on May 26th, 1811.1   John's father was John Olley and his mother was Jane Shonk.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Joseph, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte, Mary and Maria.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
