Maria was born in 1827 in Rayne, Essex and her christening took place there on April 22nd, 1827.1 2   Maria's father was John Olley and her mother was Jane Shonk.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, William, James, Joseph, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
