James was born in 1819 in Rayne, Essex and his christening took place there on May 16th, 1819.1 2   James' father was John Olley and his mother was Jane Shonk.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, Joseph, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte, Mary and Maria.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
