Joseph was born in 1821 in Rayne, Essex and his christening took place there on June 3rd, 1821.1 2   Joseph's father was John Olley and his mother was Jane Shonk.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, James, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte, Mary and Maria.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
