Mary was born in 1824 in Rayne, Essex and her christening took place there on April 11th, 1824.1 2   Mary's father was John Olley and her mother was Jane Shonk.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Olley and Mary Smee. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, William, James, Joseph, Richard, Sarah, Charlotte and Maria.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
