Joseph was born in March 1840 in Oakley, Hampshire and his christening took place there on January 12th, 1840.1 2   Joseph's father was John Oliver and his mother was Harriett Matthews.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Oliver and Sarah Worte; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Matthews and Ann Dicker. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Abraham, David, Thomas, Esau, Emily, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth and Harriett.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
