Esau was born in June 1852 in Oakley, Hampshire.1   Esau's father was John Oliver and his mother was Harriett Matthews.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Oliver and Sarah Worte; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Matthews and Ann Dicker. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Abraham, Joseph, David, Thomas, Emily, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth and Harriett.  He was the third youngest of the eleven children.
