Ann was born in December 1844 in Oakley, Hampshire and her christening took place there on October 27th, 1844.1 2   Ann's father was John Oliver and her mother was Harriett Matthews.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Oliver and Sarah Worte; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Matthews and Ann Dicker. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Abraham, Joseph, David, Thomas, Esau, Emily, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Harriett.  She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
