Emma was born on November 10th, 1832 in St Pancras, Middlesex and her christening took place on December 9th, 1832 in Saint Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex.1 2   Emma's father was Charles Norrington and her mother was Mary Ann Benton.  Her maternal grandparents were Edward Benton and Ann Griffiths. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Charles, Henry, William, Mary  and Jane.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
