William was born in 1749 in Thaxted, Essex and his christening took place on April 16th, 1749 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.1 2   William's father was James Hockley and his mother was Elizabeth Butcher.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Mary Bentley. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Daniel, John, Daniel, William and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1750.  He was buried on December 25th, 1750 in Thaxted, Essex.2
