James was born in July 1740 in Thaxted, Essex and his christening took place on July 20th, 1740 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.1   James' father was James Hockley and his mother was Elizabeth Butcher.  His paternal grandparents were William Hockley and Mary Bentley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Daniel, John, Daniel, William, William and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 77 in 1817 in Thaxted, Essex.  He was buried on May 18th, 1817 in Thaxted Parish Church, Essex.1 2
