Frederick was born on March 25th, 1865 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place on April 23rd, 1865 in Christ Church, Spitalfields, Middlesex.1 2  Frederick's father was James Thomas Hayes and his mother was Elizabeth Penn.  His paternal grandparents were William Chetwyn Hayes and Maria Briggs; his maternal grandparents were Henry John Penn and Charlotte Bott. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Henry, James, Walter, William, Albert, Elizabeth and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 76 in 1941 in Bognor Regis, Sussex.3
