James was born on July 4th, 1841 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place on August 1st, 1841 in St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, Middlesex.1 2  James' father was William Chetwyn Hayes and his mother was Maria Briggs.  His paternal grandparents were William Hayes and Sarah. He had a brother and six sisters, named William, Maria, Mary, Sarah, Charlotte, Eliza and Martha.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 68 in September 1909 in Whitechapel, Middlesex.3
