Mary was born in 1831 and her christening took place on December 11th, 1831 in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex.1  Mary's father was William Chetwyn Hayes and her mother was Maria Briggs.  Her paternal grandparents were William Hayes and Sarah. She had two brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Maria, Sarah, Charlotte, Eliza and Martha.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
