William was born in 1834 in Pimlico, Middlesex.1   William's father was William Chetwyn Hayes and his mother was Maria Briggs.  His paternal grandparents were William Hayes and Sarah. He had a brother and six sisters, named James, Maria, Mary, Sarah, Charlotte, Eliza and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
