Martha was born in 1848 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Martha's father was Henry George Gannaway and her mother was Mary Ann Bishop.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry George Gannaway and Ann Mainer. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Thomas, Charles, Alfred, Emma and Eliza.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
