Henry was born in 1836 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Henry's father was Henry George Gannaway and his mother was Mary Ann Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were Henry George Gannaway and Ann Mainer. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Charles, Alfred, Emma, Eliza and Martha.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
