William was born in September 1846 in Kelvedon, Essex and his christening took place there on September 20th, 1846.1 2   William's father was James Aylen and his mother was Pleasance Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Sayers; his maternal grandparents were James Hammond and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, George, Elizabeth and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 82 in 1928.3
