James was born in September 1848 in Kelvedon, Essex and his christening took place there on September 3rd, 1848.1 2   James' father was James Aylen and his mother was Pleasance Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Sayers; his maternal grandparents were James Hammond and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, George, Elizabeth and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 50 in June 1899 in Camberwell, Surrey.3
