George was born in June 1859 in Hornchurch, Essex.1   George's father was James Aylen and his mother was Pleasance Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Sayers; his maternal grandparents were James Hammond and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Elizabeth and Eliza.  He was the youngest of the six children.
