Thomas was born in 1857 in Hornchurch, Essex.1   Thomas' father was James Aylen and his mother was Pleasance Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Sayers; his maternal grandparents were James Hammond and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, James, George, Elizabeth and Eliza.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
