John was born on February 11th, 1802 in Kings Arms Gardens Bethnal Green and his christening took place on July 3rd, 1803 at St Georges in the East.1  John's father was Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman  and his mother was Mary Foster.  His paternal grandparents were John Spillman and Mary Carter; his maternal grandparents were Richard Forster (Rope Maker) and Jane. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William, Samuel, James, James, Robert, Mary and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine known children.  He died at the age of 61 in 1863 in Bethnal Green.

John and Roseann were married in a religious ceremony on May 3rd, 1821 at St Leonard Shoreditch Middlesex by Curate Robert Crosby and witnessed by John Fowler & Rose Fowler.2  They had five sons and three daughters, named Thomas, George, Samuel, Jonah, William, Rose, Caroline and Eliza.
