Thomas was born in 1823 in New John St Bethnal Green. Thomas' father was John Alfred Spillman (Twine Spinner) and his mother was Rose (Roseann) Ann Fowler. His paternal grandparents were Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman and Mary Foster. He had four brothers and three sisters, named George, Samuel, Jonah, William, Rose, Caroline and Eliza. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 76 in December 1899 in Thanet Kent.¹
