George was born in 1828 in New John St Bethnal Green. George's father was John Alfred Spillman (Twine Spinner) and his mother was Rose (Roseann) Ann Fowler. His paternal grandparents were Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman and Mary Foster. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Samuel, Jonah, William, Rose, Caroline and Eliza. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
