William was born in 1833 in Coggeshall Essex. William's father was William Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver) and his mother was Martha York (B Gt Cornard Suffolk D Martin Yard Braintree).  His paternal grandparents were Amos and Elizabeth (of Earls Colne). He had six brothers and three sisters, named Henry, George, Charles, Arthur, John, David, Jane, Mary and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the ten children. He had a half-brother named James.  He died by commiting suicide at the age of 53 on February 26th, 1886 at 95 Lower Railway St Braintree.  He was buried in Braintree Essex.1 2

William and Susannah were married in a ceremony on December 13th, 1853 in Braintree Register Office witnessed by Stephen Smoothy William Valance.3  They had five sons and a daughter, named Alexander, Henry, Benjamin, Robert, Charles and Martha.
