Charles was born in 1865 in MARTINS YARD BRAINTREE and his christening took place on February 6th, 1868 at St Michaels Braintree.  Charles' father was William of Coggeshall Amos (Silk Weaver) and his mother was Susannah Crisell (Hand Loom Weaver Silk b Gt Cornard).  His paternal grandparents were William Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver) and Martha York (B Gt Cornard Suffolk D Martin Yard Braintree); his maternal grandparents were Robert  Crisell (Silk Weaver b Sudbury) and Mary A (b Newton Suffolk). He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Henry, Benjamin, Robert and Martha.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Matilda.
