Martha was born in 1855 in Braintree Essex.  Martha's father was William of Coggeshall Amos (Silk Weaver) and her mother was Susannah Crisell (Hand Loom Weaver Silk b Gt Cornard).  Her paternal grandparents were William Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver) and Martha York (B Gt Cornard Suffolk D Martin Yard Braintree); her maternal grandparents were Robert  Crisell (Silk Weaver b Sudbury) and Mary A (b Newton Suffolk). She had five brothers named Alexander, Henry, Benjamin, Robert and Charles.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had a half-sister named Matilda.
