Henry was born in 1838 in Halstead Essex.  Henry's father was William Amos (b Coggeshall Silk Weaver) and his mother was Martha York (B Gt Cornard Suffolk D Martin Yard Braintree).  His paternal grandparents were Amos and Elizabeth (of Earls Colne). He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Charles, Arthur, John, David, Jane, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He had a half-brother named James.
