Margaret married her cousin's son sometime after arriving in America on 25th May 1908, apparently alone, on board the SS Caledonia, on her way to stay with her sister, Mrs M Peden at 64 W 98th Street.
Al Luce found the marriage records at Ancestry.com when it came online on 4th August 2016. Thomas Gordon married Margaret A Bellingham on Wednesday, 24th June 1908 at the home of Margaret's sister, Jane Porter at 22 Ege Avenue, Jersey City, which was where she was living at the time. The marriage took place under the auspices of the Episcopal church in Newark, New Jersey, just a month after arriving in the US. Thomas Gordon was living at 311 N 54th Street, New York. William Bellingham was one of the witnesses. This is presumably her brother, with whom they were living in 1910. Jane Porter was the other witness.
AL: Some interesting notes about the marriage record. The marriage was performed at 225 Ege Ave, Jersey City, NJ, the home of Robert Porter and Jane Bellingham Porter, Jane was Margaret's sister. The marriage was performed by a Pastor from a local Episcopal Church, perhaps through a connection with the Porters. I would note that the Episcopal Church is the US analog of the Church of Ireland, to which many of our Bellingham family belonged. The church record was associated with St John's Episcopal Church of Jersey City. That church has since become dormant. There are notes on the web about it being unsafe an slated for demolition but some have had it listed as a historic structure which precludes demolition - politics as usual. There is also a web site with photos of that church. I will note that in the 1910 US Census the Porters were living at 225 Ege Ave, Jersey City.
Nancy Turner: I'm afraid Margaret got it wrong - we only have the place and birth date (of Aunt Adeline). When he applied for a job with the M.O.D they went through various background checks. They were able to track down place and D.O.B of his mother as she had no birth certificate. The M.O.D gave John this information - Born 81st Street New York, 21st April 1909.
Ellisislandrecords showed she reentered America on 22nd June 1913, aged 30 with her daughters, Adeline, aged 3 and "Jane" (Jean?), aged 1, onboard the Cameronia, having left Londonderry on 14th June, on her way to 305, East 91st Street, New York.
517 East 85th Street, Manhattan given as her address on her daughter's birth cert (my mother, Frances) in January 1917.
By 1918 she had moved again - Al Luce writes, "I have just discovered a partial index to the World War I US Draft Registration cards (1917 - 1918). The index is part of the Ancestry.com subscription service. I did find a listing for a Thomas Gordon, native of Ireland, born: 29 Feb 1884, living with his wife, Margaret, in Locust Valley, NY and working as a farmer for an A. Burchard. Also registering from Locust Valley are: Thomas Bellingham (wife: Lavinia), working as a farmer for the same person and William J Bellingham (wife: no name given) born: Vow, No Ireland, working as an Insurance Broker. William registered in the first draft call on 5 Jun 1917 and the Thomases registered in the third call on 12 Sep 1918."
Al has now found the departure of the Gordon family from New York on their way to Moville in November 1919. Oddly, it gives them as having a son called Thomas aged 9, when it clearly should be Adeline, a daughter. Also mentioned are my mother, Francis (sic), aged 1 (she was actually almost 3) and Jeannie (my aunt Jean) aged 7. Thomas, the father, is given as aged 35, a gardener, and his wife, Margaret, 36, a housewife.
