General Notes
Al Luce says: I have used the name Jane for the later Thomas wife because that is what is recorded (Francis baptism and Fanny's marriage). The family story has always been Margaret Jane. I do note that the name Margaret does appear as an early female child in several families in the next generation. I also recall that John Bellingham, the last occupant of Edenvale, seemed to agree with Margaret Jane McCart as the name in a letter to my uncle in the 1970s.
Al also says in email dated 240107:Have I ever sent you
my Old Age Pension application extraction data table? It included Mary#2 Bellingham. She was found in the 1851 Census at age 16 with her parents, Thomas Bellingham and Jane McCart. To my recollection, Mary#2's OAP application is the only place where I have seen Jane's maiden name. The other references that I have are from my uncle's notes and a letter from a cousin in Ireland. The letter to my uncle corrects his incorrect spelling from McArt to McCart with no correction about the name belonging on thefamily tree.
Now found her on death register. Date of death being 17th Oct 1877 aged 76'
Al (040709):
I will say that I am pulled the Mary Jane McArt (or McCart) version. I have found two places where she was identified as Jane Bellingham by her children (Fanny's marriage in Newark, NJ of 1850 and Mary Bellingham McKay's OAP application of 1913). It seems more likely to me that a 'Mary Jane' rather than a 'Margaret Jane' would be known as 'Jane' to her children. It also seems that, if the naming convention had been strictly followed, the first daughter of Thomas and Rachel Georgina would be named for Rachel's mother rather than Thomas mother.
