William's father was Peter Turner and his mother was Catherine Fotheringham Archibald.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Turner Sr. and Mary Russell. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Robert, John, George, Bryce, Frank, Annie and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
