Robert's father was Andrew Taylor and his mother was Ann Scoffield.  His maternal grandparents were James Scoffield and Jane Bone. He had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Andrew, Andrew, David, Joseph, Barbra, Annie, Jannet, Janet, Mary and Jane.  He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
