Robert's father was Hugh Savage and his mother was Margaret Dickson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Savage and Elspeth Bone. He had two brothers and six sisters, named David, Francis, Grace, Elspeth, Margaret, Daniel, Agnes and Minia.  He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Grace.  He died at the age of 21 in 1876 in Tarbolton.
