David's father was Hugh Savage and his mother was Margaret Dickson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Savage and Elspeth Bone. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Robert, Francis, Grace, Elspeth, Margaret, Daniel, Agnes and Minia.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Grace.  He died at the age of 33 on February 8th, 1894 in Dreghorn.³
