Francis' father was Hugh Savage and his mother was Margaret Dickson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Savage and Elspeth Bone. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Robert, David, Grace, Elspeth, Margaret, Daniel, Agnes and Minia.  He was the third youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Grace.  He died at the age of 74 in 1937 in Glasgow.
