Mary's father was John McLatchie and her mother was Janet Crawford. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, John, Robert, Janet, Marjory, Agnes and Margaret.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She had four half-brothers named Hugh, Hugh, William and William.
