William's father was John McLatchie and his mother was Janet Mcowan. He had three brothers named Hugh, Hugh and William.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Hugh, John, Robert, Janet, Marjory, Mary, Agnes and Margaret.
