Hugh was born in 1913 in Coylton.

Hugh's father was Hugh Kegan and his mother was Hughina Corrigan. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Keagins, John, Agnes, Maggie, Hughina, Hughina and Betty. He was the third youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 75 in 1988 in Ayr.
